COENZYME Q10
CoQ10 is an antioxidant that the body produces naturally and stores in cell components called mitochondria. It is associated with energy, cell protection, and heart health benefits.
CoQ10 plays several essential roles in the body. For example, the body's cells need this compound to produce the energy that allows them to function.
As an antioxidant, CoQ10 also protects the body's cells by neutralizing free radicals, thereby reducing oxidative stress in the body. Oxidative stress can cause tissue damage, inflammation, and cell apoptosis, i.e., cell death.
The health benefits of CoQ10
CoQ10 has many different uses. Below, we examine the benefits it can offer.
1/Improved heart health
CoQ10 may help treat certain heart conditions, such as congestive heart failure and high blood pressure, especially in older adults. Research on the effectiveness of CoQ10 for heart problems has yielded mixed results. However, one study reported that CoQ10 was an important factor in the survival of older adults with chronic heart failure. Other research has shown that CoQ10 may help people recover from certain types of heart surgery.
2/Reduce migraines
CoQ10 may be effective in preventing migraines, although research on this topic is still limited. It is possible that CoQ10 has this effect because it keeps the mitochondria in cells healthy.
3/Mitigate the side effects of statins
Some research suggests that CoQ10 may help relieve muscle weakness caused by cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins.
4/ It could contribute to fertility
Female fertility declines with age due to a decrease in the number and quality of available eggs. CoQ10 is directly involved in this process. With age, CoQ10 production slows down, making the body less effective at protecting eggs from oxidative damage. CoQ10 supplementation appears to help and may even reverse this age-related decline in egg quality and quantity. Similarly, male sperm are sensitive to oxidative damage, which can lead to reduced sperm count, poor sperm quality, and infertility. Several studies have concluded that CoQ10 supplementation can improve sperm quality, activity, and concentration by increasing antioxidant protection.
5/ It could help improve physical performance
Abnormal mitochondrial function can reduce muscle energy, preventing muscles from contracting effectively and continuing exercise. CoQ10 may contribute to physical performance by reducing oxidative stress in cells and improving mitochondrial function. One study showed that CoQ10 supplementation may have helped inhibit oxidative stress and markers of muscle and liver damage in elite adolescent swimmers during their competition phase. In addition, CoQ10 supplementation may help reduce fatigue, which could also potentially improve exercise performance.
6/ It can help fight diabetes
Oxidative stress can damage cells. This can lead to metabolic diseases such as diabetes, as well as insulin resistance. In a 2018 meta-analysis, CoQ10 was suggested to improve insulin sensitivity and regulate blood sugar levels. Another study in people with diabetic neuropathy—a type of nerve damage that can occur in people with diabetes—found that taking 100 mg of CoQ10 daily for 12 weeks could improve HbA1c levels and insulin resistance. Not only that, but it may also have reduced markers of oxidative stress and harmful compounds, such as advanced glycation end products, compared to a placebo.
7/ It may be beneficial for the brain
Mitochondrial function tends to decline with age, which can lead to brain cell death and contribute to diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The brain is highly sensitive to oxidative stress due to its high fatty acid content and high oxygen demand. This oxidative stress increases the production of harmful compounds that can affect memory, cognition, and physical functions. CoQ10 can reduce these harmful compounds, which could slow the progression of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, according to some animal studies conducted in 2019 and 2021.
